Schedule: Monday-Friday 9 am - 5 pm, with alternating weekends.
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, performs bacteriological analysis of water samples using laboratory equipment. Conducts sampling of residents, commercial and industrial and distribution systems for compliance in accordance with the guidelines and regulations of DPNR and EPA.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Collect and document water samples from residential, commercial and industrial and distribution systems location and reservoir. • Perform bacteriological analysis on drinking water, waste water, and beach samples according to the procedures and test methods, while adhering to EPA's regulations. • Assist in the packaging and shipping of water sample off island. • Prepare bacteriological media and chemical solutions. • Assist in the preparation of laboratory equipment and supplies for analyses. • Draft correspondence and reports, and perform other clerical duties related to work activities. • Assist in cleaning and maintaining various laboratory devices, equipment, and surroundings. • Provide exceptional customer service to those contacted in the course of work. • Perform routine quality control checks and calibration. • Maintain a safe and clean environment.
Qualifications
Education: - Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related field
Or- Graduating senior pursing a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related field.
- Successful completion of microbiology college course preferred, but not required.
Experience:- Some working knowledge in a laboratory setting required.
- Willing to train on the job.

Licenses and Special Requirement:- Possession of a valid and appropriate USVI Driver's License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Must own a vehicle to conduct water sampling (gas reimbursement provided).
- Must pass the USVI Drinking Water Sampler course and obtain certification within a month of employment.
- Drinking Water Analysis Certification must be obtained within three months to pass probationary period.
- Completion of microbiology college course or must be completed within a year of employment.
- USVI Resident and familiar with areas located on St. Thomas and St. John, preferred.
Physical Demand:- Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.
- Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.
- Occasionally required to climb, bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Ability to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person.
- Ability to withstand strong odors.
- Extended hours may be required.
- Fluency in the English language, bilingual a plus.
- Some travel required.
Work Environment:- Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.
