The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire local students for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program at Virgin Islands National Park. Program Dates: June – August 2017
Primary Responsibilities:
Co-lead a group of 6 locally recruited high school students to complete conservation projects and environmental education at Virgin Islands National Park, St. John, USVI. Leaders will work with students on conservation projects, during business hours Monday – Friday, with nights and weekends off.
YCC crews may:
Construct and maintain trail
Soil and water restoration work
Wildlife management activities
Recreation site maintenance work
Painting and facility improvement projects
Invasive species control
YCC Crew Leaders must have strong experience teaching or working with youth, be able to maintain a positive work environment and motivate students, and be willing to work in forest conditions and in the water along the shoreline. Skills Required
Qualifications:
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must have ability to legally work in the US
Must be able to attend paid mandatory Crew Leader training in May 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA (food, lodging, and travel allowance provided by SCA)
Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18), teaching in an educational environment a plus
Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and/or gardening
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Must have personal housing arrangements
Compensation: $500/week salary; The Leaders will be provided CPR/First Aid certification once they start at the site, before the members arrive.
