The Department of Health (DOH) is an executive department of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands mandated by the Virgin Islands Code, Titles 3 and 19, authorized to “provide general medical and surgical care of acceptable standards for the people of the Virgin Islands”. (VIC3, Chapter 23, Section 418). The department is headed by the Commissioner of Health, appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Legislature.

Under the Virgin Islands Code, the DOH has direct responsibility for conducting programs of preventive medicine, health promotion and protection regulation policy development and planning, as well as maintaining the vital statistics from every aspect of health care and manages several programs, both federal and local; to meet the needs of the community it serves.
