Job Description:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: This is work concerned with deceased bodies, specimens of human organs and tissues, and hospital morgue room to assist the Pathologist and/or Medical Examiner in post mortem and pathology examination; An employee in this class usually receives on-the-job training in preparation for assignments, and work under close supervision; Work is checked for compliance with instruction and established procedures;

  • Maintains a daily log of deceased bodies brought to and released from the morgue;
  • Writes information such as date and name of deceased on specimen labels and in autopsy log book for identification and record purposes;
  • Transfers bodies via morgue vehicle to the hospital morgue and from the morgue vehicle to the morgue refrigerator, and to the autopsy table using a wheeled stretcher;
  • Ensures proper identification of bodies through arm bands, compartment labels and record of death forms accompanying the body;
  • Releases bodies to authorized persons in accordance with established procedures;
  • Assists the pathologist/medical examiner in performing pathology and post-mortem examinations;
  • Assists the pathologist/medical examiner by preparing for examination of the body, suturing the body, and cleaning up after the examination;
  • Passes surgical instruments such as knives, saws, scalpels, forceps, etc., to the pathologist/medical examiner as needed or directed;
  • Performs assigned prosecting duties, such as opening of the skull and trunk and electric saw;
  • Ties off major arteries and stumps of organs, and closes incisions in body cavities to and properly identified before they are places in storage;
  • Preserves body in refrigerated storage area until removal by the undertaker;
  • Maintains care of morgue, refrigerator, autopsy equipment and all instruments;
  • Cleans equipment and entire morgue area using water, sterilizing equipment and solutions;
  • Selects powders, liquids, and mixes in prescribed proportions to replenish supply of refrigerator temperature;
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Skills Required

High School Diploma or its equivalent and at least 18 years of age OR completion of the 10th school grade with one year experience as a hospital orderly or any related occupation dealing with hospitals, morgues and related health services; Ability to drive 4-wheel drive, standard or automatic shift vehicle, and valid Virgin Islands Government driver’s license.
