The Dean is the academic and administrative officer of the Division of Humanities and Social Science and reports directly to the Provost. Responsibilities include but not limited to managing all personnel issues within the Division; recruiting and hiring faculty in accordance with the administrative and faculty policies of the university; travel between both campuses; develop collaborative relationships with external community to support experiential and service learning related to the curriculum; coordinate student advising procedures; assist in developing outreach programs; participate in university committees and other faculty activities; coordinate program review of school programs; responsibility for the professional development needs of the faculty, the Division efforts in achieving the objectives of the University’s vision 2012; maintain a deep commitment to engagement with the community; enhance and sustain an environment of academic excellence including the initiative to develop innovative programs and recruit and retain well-qualified students; develop and support new undergraduate and graduate programs that contribute to the health and well-being of society; provide sound fiscal leadership; develop resources for faculty research initiatives and assist in faculty efforts to secure external funding. The successful candidate will also be expected to work collaboratively with other Deans to foster cross divisional partnerships, promote commitment to an education curriculum based on the mission, vision and core values of the University (www.uvi.edu).
Skills Required
A PhD or a terminal degree in related areas and a record of academic achievement appropriate for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor; at least five (5) years of experience as a faculty member in a comprehensive university; demonstrated leadership and management skills including a minimum of three (3) years as a Department Chair, Director or Administrator in an accredited program; experience with fund raising; experience working with the media and legislative and government branches; experience in curricular development, strategic planning, assessment, program maintenance, budgeting and shared governance; evidence of support for faculty research; successful experience with accreditation procedures and processes is preferred.
