Under the supervision of the Executive Director or Shelter Manager, the Relief Worker helps to provide a safe, comfortable home-like milieu for battered person(s); men, women and/or children. The regular schedule for these employees is weekends and evenings as needed.Using skills in establishing relationships provides support for residents.Shifts are usually 5-8 hours in length.
1. Answers the telephone and responds with empathy for the troubled person(s).
2. Maintain Control and/or supervision of shelter and clients, rotates coverage forweekends and holidays on the telephone emergency services.
3. Facilitate daily activities with clients.
4. Ability to advocate on behalf of client for other services with various individualsand agencies.
5. Provide assistance to clients as necessary to include food preparation forshopping.Prepare rooms for entrance or exit client.Light lifting and moving ofitems.Provide written documentation to shelter manager re: activities on shift.
6. Interviews and consoles clients who need the services of the shelter afterregular hours.
7. Involves the residents in the maintenance of the shelter.
8. Assists the Shelter Manager as needed with other related duties.
9. Responds to crisis calls requiring an in-person advocate response.
Skills Required
Excellent oral and written communication skills.Demonstrated empathy and understanding for the crisis victim(s).Knowledge about sensitivity to cultural differences and various economical backgrounds.Ability to be cooperative with residents and staff.Ability to respond to emergencies without panic.Patience with those in distress.Ability to act quickly and appropriately in situations of conflict.Stern yet sympathetic attitude.Ability to set and maintain staff client/ boundaries.Excellent decision making skills.
High School Diploma or GED equivalency with at least one year in another employment position or Two (2) years college with One (1) year in Social Service Agency and demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationship with people of all backgrounds.Experience in social services area preferred.
